Traditional A/E Services for Higher Education and K-12 Facilities
For more than 50 years, GMK Associates has been designing for the colleges/universities and public/ private
K-12 markets. For example, GMK has had an over 30-year relationship working with the University of South Carolina (multiple campuses) under individual architecture and engineering contracts and indefinite delivery or “on-call” service contracts. In fact, our firm possesses unparalleled knowledge and understanding of the designs and infrastructure of several of USC’s key buildings, and this institutional knowledge goes beyond the Columbia campus. GMK has also been involved in the design and construction of multiple facilities at USC-Aiken, USC-Sumter, USC Upstate, and USC School of Medicine. Other recent projects have been completed for Francis Marion University, Allen University, Benedict College, and Midlands Technical College, among other institutions.
Additionally, from its founding GMK focused for almost 25 years as a primarily K-12 architecture firm throughout South Carolina. As such, the firm completed countless K-12 projects, including dozens of brand new elementary, middle and high schools, as well as school addition/renovation projects. In 1999, GMK Associates, Inc., of Columbia, SC, merged with John E. Ramsay AIA/the Raleigh office of Ramsay, Burgin, Smith Architects – making comprehensive design and project management services available through an integrated, multi-disciplinary firm.
GMK’s Raleigh component (GMK of North Carolina PC, a subsidiary of GMK Associates, Inc.) is led by John Ramsay AIA, NCARB, who has a 25+ year relationship with the Wake County (NC) Public School System as well as other public school systems such as McDowell County (NC) Schools, Lexington (NC) City Schools, and Rowan County (NC) School System. In the last 15 years, GMK has also completed a total of eight new/renovation school projects – Aversboro Elementary School (100 percent new), Aldert Root Elementary School (90 percent new), Bugg Elementary (50 percent new), Apex Elementary School (80 percent new), Adams Elementary School (40 percent new) and Lincoln Heights Elementary School (70 percent new) for Wake County Public School System, and North Cove Elementary School (100 percent new) and Pleasant Gardens High School (80 percent new) for McDowell County Schools. These projects are in addition to numerous comprehensive facility assessments and feasibility studies, as well as numerous small capital improvement projects.
