Caldwell-Hampton-Boylston House
Carriage House Storage Room Addition

Under an indefinite delivery contract for professional services, GMK Associates was retained to prepare an initial “preservation study” and provide architectural and engineering designs for the replacement of an existing storage room addition on the north side of the Boylston Carriage House (a supplementary structure to the historic Caldwell-Hampton-Boylston House) located on the grounds of the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion in Columbia, SC. The existing structure had been damaged by termites and a fallen tree, requiring the structure to be fully demolished and rebuilt, including foundations.

The new building is an unconditioned, slab on grade, single story structure with minimal lighting and no plumbing. The new storage room is constructed with treated wood framing, painted Hardieplank siding and trim, and a metal roofing on wood roof sheathing. There was also damage to the eave on the west side of the Carriage House main building caused by the fallen tree. This eave was consequently replaced as well with painted wood trim to match the existing structure. Minor repairs to the structural framing (outlookers and last joist) were also required.

All designs for the project required coordination with the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for plan review.
